Costs a surgeon must disclose
Under guideline 5.1 of the Medical Board of Australia’s cosmetic surgery guidelines, the surgeon must give information about costs before consent, including:
- the total cost
- costs of any implants or other devices
- fees of other medical practitioners, for example an assistant surgeon and the anaesthetist
- facility costs, for example theatre fees and the hospital or day procedure centre
- deposits and payments required, payment dates, and refund of deposits
- follow-up care, including garments or devices to support recovery
- possible costs for allied health or other care after surgery
- possible further costs for revision surgery or additional treatment
- that cosmetic surgery is not covered by Medicare
Under guideline 3.8 a surgery can be booked, or a deposit paid, only after a cooling-off period of at least seven days following two consultations and signed consent.
